S-Pedelec maintenance: When each service is due
Short answer
An S-pedelec requires 1–2 services per year (approx. CHF 150–350) plus personal checks every 500 km. In addition to standard bike checks (brakes, chain, tyres), S-pedelecs also require checks on motor firmware, battery diagnostics and bolt torque. Regular maintenance doubles the bike’s lifespan and ensures you retain your warranty and insurance cover.

Service intervals at a glance
| Interval | Scope | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Every ride | Visual inspection of tyres and brakes | – |
| Every 200 km | Clean and oil the chain | (do it yourself, using maintenance products) |
| Every 500 km | Brake pads, tyre pressure | First 500 km free if the e-bike was purchased from AureusDrive, thereafter approx. CHF 100 |
| Every 1’500 km / 6 Mt. | Minor service at a specialist dealer | CHF 150 |
| Every 3’000 km / 12 Mt. | Major service | CHF 250–350 |
| After 10’000 km | Major overhaul | CHF 500+ |
What does the major service involve?
- Motor diagnostics via manufacturer’s software
- Firmware update for motor and display
- Battery diagnostics (remaining capacity, cell condition)
- Brakes: pads, brake fluid, discs
- Chain washed, measured and replaced if necessary
- Sprocket set and chainring checked
- Tyres checked for wear, pressure and spokes
- All bolts retightened to specified torque
- Lights and electronics checked
- Frame inspected for cracks
- Suspension fork lubricated (if fitted)
- Test ride & handover report
Warning signs that should prompt immediate servicing
- 🚨 Clattering / grinding noise from the motor
- 🚨 Significant, sudden drop in range (>25%)
- 🚨 Error code on the display
- 🚨 Brake pulls to one side or does not engage immediately
- 🚨 Play in the headset or bottom bracket
- 🚨 Crack in the frame (of any size!)
Approximate costs for 5 years’ maintenance (realistic)
- 5× minor services: CHF 750
- 4× major services: CHF 1,200
- Wear parts (chain, tyres, brakes): CHF 800
- Total for 5 years: approx. CHF 2,750 (CHF 550/year)

These jobs you can do yourself
Chain maintenance (every 200 km)
- Wipe the chain with a dry cloth
- Spray on degreaser (if heavily soiled)
- Leave to dry
- Apply a few drops of chain oil to each link
- Rotate the chain backwards to allow the oil to soak in
- Wipe off any excess oil
Important: Wet oil for winter/rain, dry oil for summer.
Tyre pressure (every 2 weeks)
- Specified on the side of the tyre
- Standard: 3.5–5.0 bar
- Winter: 0.3 bar less for grip
- Too low: Increased wear + reduced range
Brake pad check (every 500 km)
- Visual inspection: min. 1 mm pad thickness
- The brake disc must not have any deep grooves
- If there is a squeaking noise: clean the pads (brake cleaner)
Bolts (every 1,000 km)
- Saddle clamp, handlebar stem, brake levers
- Never overtighten (use a torque wrench!)
- Typical: 5–8 Nm
What ONLY a specialist dealer may/should do
- Open/service the motor
- Open the battery (fire hazard!)
- Firmware updates
- Bleed hydraulic brakes
- Thru-axle replacement
- Frame repairs
- Warranty diagnostics
Important: If you tinker with the motor yourself, you will void the manufacturer’s warranty.

FAQ on servicing
Can I have the service carried out at a standard bike shop?
For brakes, chain and tyres, yes. The motor and battery require an S-Pedelec-certified dealer (AureusDrive, Bosch eBike Expert, Yamaha, etc.).
Do I lose the warranty if I don’t have an annual service?
Usually, yes. The manufacturer’s warranty (2–5 years) requires regular servicing.
How much does a battery replacement cost?
A new battery costs between CHF 670 and CHF 1,440. A cell refurbishment (cell replacement) starts at CHF 400.
How long does a service take?
Minor service: 2–4 hours. Major service: 4–7 hours. Often possible on the same day, but only if there are no bookings.
Do I need to book a service appointment well in advance?
Yes, especially in spring (March–May). Allow 2–4 weeks’ notice, and advance booking is also very much appreciated at other times of the year. If you can’t do without your e-bike, you can request a loan bike when booking; you’ll simply need to pay a small flat-rate fee for this.
