The best e-bike motor for you

Which motor/drive is right for you?

The motor is the heart of an e-bike. It determines the riding experience, power delivery and how reliable and low-maintenance your bike is in everyday use. At AureusDrive, we rely on two proven technologies: the low-maintenance, fast rear wheel hub motor and the powerful mid-drive motor – depending on the area of application. But which is the best motor for your needs

The two main drive types compared

Mid-drive motor – the central power source

The mid-drive motor is installed in the bottom bracket area and transfers power directly to the chain or belt. This ensures:

  • A more natural riding experience with direct power transmission
  • Optimal weight distribution for sporty riding
  • Efficient performance on hills or hilly routes

Ideal for:

Sporty riders, commuters with a hilly route to work, tours with luggage, heavy loads (e.g. child seat, trailer)

AureusDrive offers mid-drive motors, e.g. in the DailyDrive or Classic/Comfort model.

Particularly clever: If a defect occurs, the AureusDrive motor can be opened and repaired instead of being completely replaced. This not only saves resources, but is also environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Rear wheel hub motor – quiet, low-maintenance, suitable for everyday use:

This motor is installed in the rear wheel hub and transfers energy directly to the rear wheel. In AureusDrive, it is installed in the PowerDrive and Power45 models, for example.

  • Whisper-quiet operation, ideally barely audible in city traffic
  • No additional wear on the bottom bracket
  • Low maintenance – no additional gearbox
  • Harmonious thrust from behind – ‘tailwind effect’

Ideal for

Commuters, beginners, leisure riders, flat routes and urban use

A high-quality e-bike motor usually lasts up to 30,000 km or longer – with regular use and maintenance. In many cases, the entire motor is replaced when it breaks down – which is quick but not very sustainable.

AureusDrive advantage:

At AureusDrive, we rely on low-maintenance motors that do not need to be completely replaced in the event of a breakdown. Our technology allows the motor to be opened and repaired so that only defective parts need to be replaced.

This is more resource-efficient, cost-effective and significantly more environmentally friendly than a complete replacement – and meets our standards for long-lasting mobility.

The rear wheel hub motor used by AureusDrive demonstrates the advantages of modern direct drives:

FeatureDetails
Voltage & power48 V, 350–1’000 W (nominal)
Torque45–55 Nm – ideal for commuting
Noise level≤ 50 dB – virtually silent
Efficiency≥ 82% – very efficient
Weight approx. 5.0–5.4 kg
Protection class IPX5 – splash-proof

Programming & fine tuning – an often underestimated difference

The software programming of an e-bike determines how sensitively the motor responds, how quickly assistance is provided and how the overall riding experience feels. Many manufacturers use standardised basic programmes that fit as many models as possible – this saves effort, but leads to a less individual riding experience.

The AureusDrive advantage: Tuned in Lucerne

At AureusDrive, we take a different approach:

Our e-bikes are not delivered with mass-produced programmes, but are programmed and fine-tuned directly in Lucerne – tailored to the specific model and intended use.

For you, this means:

  • More harmonious support when starting off and riding uphill
  • Optimal performance settings for everyday use or sport
  • Noticeably better riding experience from the moment you start pedalling

The result is an e-bike that not only impresses with its technology, but also rides really well – day after day.
