Chain or belt drive for your e-bike?
Anyone looking to buy an e-bike will sooner or later be faced with the question: chain or toothed belt?
Both options have their merits – but depending on your riding style, intended use and comfort requirements, one system may be better than the other.
In this article, we will show you the most important differences, advantages and disadvantages – and explain why AureusDrive offers both systems (chain/toothed belt).
Chain drive – proven & widely used
The classic chain drive consists of a bicycle chain, sprocket and chainring. It has proven itself over decades – and has been continuously developed.
Advantages of chain drive:
- High efficiency & direct power transmission
- Good for steep climbs & sporty riding
- Simple & widely used – spare parts are available everywhere
Disadvantages of chain drive:
- Regular maintenance required (lubrication, cleaning)
- Wear in wet or dirty conditions
- Chain should be replaced every 2,500–3,500 km
Recommended use:
For sporty riders, frequent riders or anyone who wants maximum flexibility in gear ratio.
AureusDrive advantage:
Our models with chain drive (e.g. Power45) are designed for maximum efficiency – ideal for longer distances and performance-oriented users. We provide you with high-quality components.

Belt drive – clean & low-maintenance
The belt drive replaces the classic chain with a carbon belt – quiet, durable and virtually maintenance-free.
Advantages of the toothed belt:
- No oil, no lubricant – no dirt!
- Quiet running & less friction
- Longer service life (up to 15,000 km)
- Lower maintenance (just wipe down occasionally)
- No ‘slipping’ as with worn chains
Disadvantages of belt drives:
- Can only be combined with hub gears or continuously variable transmission
- Higher purchase price
- Frame must be designed for belts
- Reduced range due to additional energy consumption
Recommended use:
For everyday riders, commuters or e-bikers who value comfort, cleanliness and durability.
AureusDrive advantage:
Our belt models (e.g. DailyDrive, PowerDrive) are particularly low-maintenance – ideal for city traffic, commuting and anyone who wants more riding and less maintenance. Perfect in combination with our durable hub gear.
Chain vs. belt – which is right for you?
Criterion | Chain | Belt |
---|---|---|
Maintenance | Medium | Low |
Service life | Medium (approx. 3,000 km) | Very high (up to 15,000 km) |
Riding experience | Direct, sporty | Quiet, smooth |
Cleaning | Regular (in rain, snow, etc.) | Rarely necessary (<2x per year) |
Compatibility | Universal | Only special frames |
Price | Affordable | Slightly more expensive |
Conclusion: Both drives have their strengths – the choice is yours!
