How much does it cost to maintain an e-bike?
An overview of the running costs of e-bikes and S-pedelecs
E-bikes and S-pedelecs get you to your destination quickly, flexibly and in an environmentally friendly way. But what about the running costs? In this article, we highlight the most important maintenance items – from electricity and servicing to insurance – and show how e-bikes (up to 25 km/h) and S-pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) differ.
1. Electricity costs: how much does charging cost?
The electricity consumption of an e-bike is surprisingly low. A full battery charge (700–1,440 Wh, depending on capacity) costs between 10 and 20 pence – less than an espresso. Even frequent riders who use their bikes every day rarely exceed 30–50 CHF in electricity costs per year.
Tip: If you charge your e-bike with solar power, you not only reduce your costs, but also ride virtually CO₂-neutral.

2. Maintenance & wear
Component | Interval (rough estimate) | Costs (average) |
---|---|---|
Chain & drive | every 2,500 km | CHF 50–150 |
Brake pads | depending on use | CHF 30–80 |
Inspection | 1–2 times a year recommended | CHF 80–180 |
Tyres | every 5.000–6.000 km | CHF 50–120 |
Note: AureusDrive e-bikes are robustly designed. Nevertheless, regular maintenance is worthwhile – for your safety and the longevity of your e-bike.
3. Insurance & registration (only for S-pedelecs)
While classic e-bikes (up to 25 km/h) are not subject to compulsory insurance, the situation is different for S-pedelecs:
- Compulsory insurance (liability): from CHF 60/year, depending on the provider
- Licence plate & vignette: CHF 40 per year
- Initial registration of the licence plate: CHF 35 (varies by canton)
- Helmet requirement: required by law
- Rear-view mirror: mandatory equipment, already installed at AureusDrive
Private liability insurance often covers simple e-bikes – a separate policy is required for S-pedelecs.

4. Battery replacement – plan for every few years

Depending on care and use, a battery lasts around 4–6 years or 500–1,000 charging cycles. A replacement battery costs between CHF 700 and 1200. You should factor this one-off cost into your long-term budget – but it will pay for itself over the years.
AureusDrive batteries are durable, easy to remove from the frame and can be charged externally on all models – this protects the technology and extends the service life. That’s why AureusDrive guarantees you at least 70% capacity after 2 years for the battery. What’s more, replacement is straightforward and fairly priced.
5. Accessories & comfort: small extras, big impact
Many manufacturers offer their e-bikes in a very basic version. What may seem cheap at first glance can quickly become expensive due to necessary additional equipment. Typical accessories such as a good lock, a helmet, weatherproof clothing or bags can easily add up to several hundred pounds.
Possible expenses:
- Parents often spend between CHF 150 and CHF 700 on a child seat or bike trailer.
- A high-quality bicycle helmet usually costs between CHF 80 and CHF 250 – particularly smart models with indicator functions cost a little more.
- A secure lock is essential and costs between CHF 50 and CHF 150.
- Rainwear or special cycling clothing costs around CHF 100 to CHF 250.
- If you cycle regularly, it is worth investing in a sturdy bike bag or basket (CHF 50 to CHF 120).
- A mobile phone holder for navigation is available from CHF 20 – handy for daily trips.
AureusDrive advantage:
What others sell as accessories is included in our basic equipment. Additional accessories (e.g. baskets, mobile phone holders, child seats, etc.) are installed free of charge upon purchase – so you can set off perfectly equipped right away.

Conclusion: How much does an e-bike cost to maintain?
An e-bike or S-pedelec offers many advantages, but also involves ongoing costs. Depending on mileage and model, you should expect to pay between CHF 200 and CHF 600 per year for maintenance, wear and tear, depreciation and accessories. S-pedelecs incur additional costs for insurance, registration plates, helmet-compliant equipment and slightly higher battery wear.
A realistic overview of annual maintenance costs:
- Maintenance & service: CHF 220
- Electricity costs: CHF 40
- Battery wear (depreciation): CHF 125
- Wear parts (tyres, brakes): CHF 75
- Liability insurance & vignette (S-pedelecs only): approx. CHF 120
