Safety on two wheels
4 tips for relaxed and safe driving in traffic
For a safe and stress-free riding experience on two wheels, it is important to know some basic rules of conduct in road traffic.
Whether you commute every day or only ride your bike, e-bike or S-pedelec occasionally – these tips will help you get to your destination safely.
1️⃣ Dooring: Keep your distance from parked cars
Dooring accidents are one of the most common dangers for cyclists. This is when a car door is carelessly opened by a driver and you could ride straight into it. To avoid this, you should always keep a distance of at least one meter to the side of parked cars. This will keep you out of the so-called “dooring zone” and protect you from sudden obstacles.
Tip: Pay particular attention on roads where there are a lot of cars parked. It’s better to keep too much distance than too little – your safety comes first!
2️⃣ Roundabouts: Safe driving on traffic circles
Traffic circles can be challenging for cyclists. To enter and exit safely, you should stay in the middle of the lane. This will make you more visible and give you enough space to clearly show your intention.
Before entering the traffic circle, you should get into the middle of the lane. A quick glance back and a clear hand signal will show other road users where you want to go. This will prevent misunderstandings and help you find your way safely through the traffic circle.
3️⃣ Bike pouch: Be visible in front of the cars
The bike pouch– the special area for bikes at traffic lights – is a great way to make yourself more visible in traffic. At red lights, you position yourself in front of the waiting cars. As soon as the small bike light turns green a few seconds before the cars, you can ride off safely and get in front of the motor vehicles.
This early positioning means that you are not only more visible, but also on the road earlier, which contributes to a safer traffic situation.
4️⃣ Turning left: Safe maneuvering
Turning left is one of the more dangerous tasks on the road. Before you turn, always pay attention to the traffic behind you. A glance back, a clear hand signal and correct lane entry are crucial to clearly signal your intention. Make sure that you don’t take the right of way from anyone and that you negotiate the bend properly.
Through clear communication and attentive behavior, you ensure that you can turn off safely and without stress.
If you have to stop to turn left because there is no gap, make sure that you downshift the derailleur early before braking in order to protect the derailleur and make your journey more comfortable.
We hope that these tips will help you to ride your e-bike, bicycle or S-pedelec safely and to be relaxed on the road. Ride carefully and always arrive safely at your destination, because:
“Consideration on the road costs nothing, but
can save lives.”
